Calculate PanchangWhat is Panchang?
The word Panchang comes from Sanskrit: "Pancha" means five, and "Anga" means limb or component. Panchang, a Vedic calendar system used for thousands of years, defines five fundamental qualities of time to determine the energy of days, as well as auspicious and inauspicious periods.
In the Vedic tradition, each day is much more than a simple combination of date and time. Every moment carries different qualities according to the cosmic energy flow. Panchang is used to understand these energies, make important decisions (such as marriage, starting a business, or embarking on a journey), and discover the effects of the birth moment on one's character.
Important Note: Panchang is one of the most fundamental tools of Vedic astrology. Daily updated Panchang information is published in newspapers and websites in India, and is followed by millions of people. Birth Panchang offers deep insights into a person's character, talents, and life path.
The 5 Components of Panchang
The Panchang system consists of five fundamental elements. Each represents a different dimension of time, and together they draw the complete energy map of a day or the moment of birth:
| Component | Definition | Total Count |
|---|---|---|
| Vara | Day of the week (planetary ruler) | 7 |
| Tithi | Moon's position relative to the Sun (lunar day) | 30 |
| Nakshatra | Lunar mansion (star group where the Moon resides) | 27 |
| Yoga | Angular combination of the Sun and Moon | 27 |
| Karana | Half Tithi (each Tithi contains 2 Karanas) | 11 |
Each of these five components determines the energy quality of a day, its suitability, and the influence of the birth moment on the individual. Let us now examine each one in detail:
1. Vara: Day of the Week
Vara refers to the days of the Vedic week, and each day is governed by a planet. Similar to the days of the week in Western culture, but directly connected to planetary energies:
- Sunday (Ravivar): Ruled by the Sun — suitable for leadership, authority, and official matters
- Monday (Somvar): Ruled by the Moon — suitable for family, emotional bonds, and mental peace
- Tuesday (Mangalvar): Ruled by Mars — suitable for energy, courage, and competitive endeavors
- Wednesday (Budhvar): Ruled by Mercury — suitable for communication, commerce, and learning
- Thursday (Guruvar): Ruled by Jupiter — suitable for education, spiritual matters, and teaching
- Friday (Shukravar): Ruled by Venus — suitable for love, art, aesthetics, and entertainment
- Saturday (Shanivar): Ruled by Saturn — suitable for discipline, long-term plans, and tasks requiring patience
Your birth Vara influences the core energy of your personality and your natural tendencies in life. To learn which day you were born on and your planetary ruler, you can calculate your Vedic birth chart.
2. Tithi: Lunar Day and Moon Phases
Tithi represents the Vedic lunar day based on the angular position of the Moon relative to the Sun. There are a total of 30 Tithis, each covering approximately 12 degrees of angular difference. Tithis are divided into two main periods (Paksha):
Shukla Paksha (Bright Half)
This is the 15-day period from New Moon (Amavasya) to Full Moon (Purnima). During this period, the Moon waxes and its light increases. Energy expands, making it suitable for outward activities, new beginnings, growth, and progress.
Krishna Paksha (Dark Half)
This is the 15-day period from Full Moon (Purnima) to New Moon (Amavasya). During this period, the Moon wanes and its light diminishes. Energy turns inward, making it suitable for completion, purification, introspection, and spiritual practices.
Practical Tip: Shukla Paksha is suitable for expansion activities such as starting new ventures, making investments, and getting married. Krishna Paksha is preferred for meditation, yoga, breaking old habits, and inner work.
Each Tithi has its own unique energy. For example:
- Pratipada (1st Tithi): New beginnings, plans
- Purnima (15th Tithi - Full Moon): Completion, peak, emotional intensity
- Amavasya (30th Tithi - New Moon): Endings, cleansing, honoring ancestral spirits
3. Nakshatra: The Moon's Stellar Position
Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions (star groups) where the Moon resides. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of arc and has its own planetary ruler. The Nakshatra system is one of the most precise and personal elements of Vedic astrology.
Your birth Nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra) determines the deepest layers of your character, your emotional makeup, natural talents, and life purpose. Additionally, the Nakshatra ruler also governs the starting point of your Dasha period system.

4. Yoga: Sun-Moon Combination
Yoga is one of 27 combinations calculated from the angular sum of the Sun and Moon. Each Yoga carries a special energy quality and influences the overall atmosphere of the day or moment of birth.
While some Yogas are considered very auspicious (for example, Siddha Yoga), others require a more cautious approach. Yoga is evaluated together with Tithi and Nakshatra to determine the overall suitability of a day (Muhurta). For detailed information about the Yoga in your birth chart, you can examine your Vedic birth chart.
5. Karana: Half Tithi
Karana is a shorter time unit representing half of each Tithi. There are a total of 11 Karanas, and each Tithi contains 2 Karanas. Karanas are used for fine-tuning the timing of daily activities.
Some Karanas are fixed, while others are movable. Auspicious Karanas are preferred for starting a business, shopping, and traveling, while certain Karanas call for avoiding such activities. To learn your daily Karana information, you can use our Panchang calculation tool.
Muhurta: Auspicious Timing
Muhurta is the art of selecting the most auspicious time for important events in Vedic astrology. All five components of Panchang, planetary positions in transits, and the birth chart are evaluated together to determine an ideal moment.
Muhurta is especially important in the following situations:
- Marriage: Choosing the right Tithi, Nakshatra, and Yoga influences the couple's happiness

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do you read a Panchang?
Reading a Panchang means evaluating the five components (Vara, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana) together. Each component is examined for what it signifies on that day or at the moment of birth. Daily Panchang can be found in newspapers and online resources. With Cosmolica's Panchang tool, you can perform automatic calculations and get interpretations.
What is the difference between Tithi and Nakshatra?
Tithi indicates the Moon's angular position relative to the Sun (i.e., the lunar day and phase information), while Nakshatra shows which star group the Moon is located in across the sky.
