Why Are Signs Different in Vedic Astrology?
Why does your zodiac sign come out differently in Vedic astrology compared to Western astrology? What is the fundamental difference between the two systems, and which one is correct? In this article, we explain in detail the sidereal (fixed star-based) and tropical (equinox-based) systems, the concept of Ayanamsa, and why your zodiac sign may differ.
See Your Chart in Both Systems
The best way to understand the difference between Vedic and Western astrology is to see your own chart in both systems. Calculate your Vedic chart and discover how your sign changes.

Most of us first encountered astrology through the daily horoscope columns in newspapers. And we probably all remember the moment we first tried to learn our zodiac sign or Ascendant out of curiosity. The sign we typically learn and know is calculated according to the Western Astrology system — but did you know there is another type of astrology called Vedic Astrology, also known as Karmic Astrology, and that your sign or Ascendant may come out differently under the Vedic calculation system?
Astrology is the study and exploration of the movements of planets and visible stars in our solar system, seeking to draw parallels between these movements and events in life on Earth. Astrology is not a science; the scientific discipline that measures the angular positions of planets and stars relative to Earth is astronomy, and today astrologers work using astronomical data and tables.
Important Note: Both Western and Vedic astrology use the same planets, and both have a system of 12 houses and 12 signs. The fundamental difference lies in how the starting point of the signs is determined. This difference is approximately 23–24 degrees and continues to increase over time.
The 12 Houses and 12 Signs System
As you can see in the diagram, both Western and Vedic Astrology have 12 houses and 12 signs. Each house has a sign, and the starting sign is Aries. When you say "I'm a Cancer," it means that at the exact moment and minute of your birth, the Sun was positioned in the sign of Cancer.
The Ascendant (Rising Sign) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your location at that moment. The Ascendant changes significantly based on location and even by the minute. This is why the exact birth time is so important in both Western and Vedic Astrology. In Vedic Astrology especially, the Ascendant is of critical importance, and most calculations are made by treating the Ascendant as the 1st house.
Tropical vs Sidereal: The Core Difference
Now let's get to the fundamental difference between Western and Vedic Astrology:
Western Astrology — Tropical (Equinox) System
Western astrology takes the date when the Sun enters Aries as a fixed equinox date each year. This date falls around March 19–20–21. This is the moment of the vernal equinox — when day and night are of equal length.
The Tropical system is based on the seasons and takes the position of Earth's axis as its reference. Aries 0 degrees = the beginning of spring. This system was aligned with the fixed stars about 2,000 years ago, but due to precession (the slow wobble of Earth's axis), it is no longer aligned.
Vedic Astrology — Sidereal (Fixed Stars) System
Vedic Astrology, also known as Karmic Astrology, determines the Sun's entry into Aries based on the exact moment the Sun enters the constellation of Aries. In other words, while the equinox date marks Aries 0 degrees in Western astrology, in Vedic Astrology the Sun marks Aries 0 degrees when it enters the Aries constellation according to the fixed stars.
The Sidereal system takes the actual physical positions in the universe as its reference. The Nakshatra system is based on these fixed stars.
Ayanamsa: The Measure of the Difference
The difference between the two systems is called Ayanamsa. As of 2026, the Ayanamsa is approximately 24 degrees. This means that most people will find themselves in the previous sign in Vedic astrology:
- Cancer in Western → most likely Gemini in Vedic
- Leo in Western → most likely Cancer in Vedic
- Virgo in Western → most likely Leo in Vedic
However, this is not absolute — depending on whether your birth date falls at the beginning or end of a sign, you may remain in the same sign.
Example: A person born on June 15, 1990 is a Gemini in Western astrology (Sun in Gemini). However, in Vedic astrology, the Sun is still in the Taurus constellation, so their Vedic sign is Taurus.
What Do We See in the Diagram?
In the diagram, on the outermost ring you can see the fixed stars. In Vedic Astrology, these are called Nakshatras. Vedic Astrology performs its calculations based on these fixed stars on the outermost ring — which is why when you are a Cancer in Western Astrology, the Sun may still be in Gemini in Vedic astrology, and your sign may come out one sign behind.
The "have the zodiac signs changed?" headlines that have appeared in recent years are actually the result of Vedic Astrology becoming more popular. In reality, the signs never changed — two different systems have always existed, and people are just now learning about the difference.
Which One Is Correct? Tropical or Sidereal?
This is one of the most debated questions in the astrology community. The truth is: both systems are internally consistent and can be effective.
- Western astrology (Tropical) focuses on psychological astrology, modern interpretation, and seasonal energies. It is strong for personal development, relationships, and psychological analysis.
- Vedic astrology (Sidereal) focuses on karmic astrology, prediction, and timing systems (Dasha, Panchang). It is strong for predicting the timing of life events and analyzing Yoga combinations.
It's not about which one is "more correct," but rather which system resonates more with you. Some people identify more with their Western sign, while others find themselves reflected in their Vedic sign.
Recommendation: Try both systems. Calculate your Vedic chart and compare it with your Western chart. Which sign descriptions speak to you more? Which one better reflects your personality? The answers to these questions will show you which system is more suitable for you.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal (fixed star-based) system, while Western astrology uses the tropical (equinox) system. There is approximately a 24-degree difference between them (Ayanamsa). Because of this, most people find themselves one sign back in Vedic astrology.
What is Ayanamsa?
Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the Tropical and Sidereal systems. Due to the precession (slow wobble) of Earth's axis, this difference is continuously increasing. In 2026, it is approximately 24 degrees.
Which system is more accurate?
Both systems are internally consistent. Western astrology is strong for psychological analysis and personal development, while Vedic astrology excels in timing (Dasha) and prediction. You can try both to discover which one is more meaningful for you.
Did the zodiac signs really change?
No, the zodiac signs did not change. Two different systems (Tropical and Sidereal) have always existed. As Vedic astrology gained popularity in recent years, people learned about this difference and the perception that "the signs changed" emerged. In reality, your Western and Vedic signs were always different — you simply weren't aware of it.
Which sign should I look at in my Vedic chart?
In Vedic astrology, the most important sign is your Ascendant (Lagna). Your Sun and Moon signs are also important, but the Ascendant defines the foundation of your personality and your life path. You can find detailed explanations in our 12 Vedic Signs guide.
