Muhurta is the ancient Vedic art of selecting the most auspicious — or identifying the most inauspicious — moment for an action or event, by reading the energies of the sky at that exact instant.

Surgery muhurta selects a careful moment for an operation or invasive procedure, adjusting the scoring for procedure type (general, major, cosmetic, dental, eye and others). The engine evaluates tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna, with particular attention to the Moon's sign relative to the body part being operated on (the lunar zodiac–limb correspondence) and to Mars, the natural significator of surgery and incision. Sharp, active nakshatras and a paksha that suits the procedure are weighed together.

For surgery muhurta, Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are always excluded as hard blockers, and Dur Muhurta and Varjyam are flagged as warnings. Classical rules avoid operating when the Moon occupies the zodiac sign ruling the body part under the knife, and during Chandrashtama, a debilitated or combust Moon, or Bhadra (Vishti karana). Kartari Yoga on Lagna and Gandanta Moon further lower the score. The waning Moon (Krishna Paksha) is often preferred for excisions and removals, while a strong lagna and an unafflicted Mars support a safe procedure.
