Muhurta is the ancient Vedic art of selecting the most auspicious — or identifying the most inauspicious — moment for an action or event, by reading the energies of the sky at that exact instant.

Namakarana is the Vedic baby-naming ceremony, one of the sixteen Samskaras, traditionally performed on the tenth or twelfth day after birth. The muhurta evaluates tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna quality at the ceremony location. Gentle and nurturing nakshatras are favored: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati carry high weight, as they support the child's health, intellect and auspicious beginnings. If the child's birth nakshatra is known, Tara Bala is computed to confirm the day is harmonious with the child's natal Moon.

For Namakarana muhurta, Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are always excluded as hard blockers. Dur Muhurta and Varjyam are flagged as soft warnings. Gandanta (Moon at the water-fire sign junction) is treated as a critical blocker for children's ceremonies, as this vulnerable zone is considered inauspicious for initiating new life milestones. A debilitated or combust Moon is also blocked, since the Moon rules the child's mind and well-being. Waxing Moon tithis (Shukla Paksha) are strongly preferred; Ashtami, Navami and Chaturdashi of Krishnapaksha are avoided.
