Muhurta is the ancient Vedic art of selecting the most auspicious — or identifying the most inauspicious — moment for an action or event, by reading the energies of the sky at that exact instant.

Travel muhurta (Yatra muhurta) selects an auspicious moment to begin a journey, weighing tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna strength alongside the direction of travel. Classical texts favour movable (chara) and light nakshatras for departures — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati are considered especially auspicious for setting out, as they support safe, swift and successful travel. Mercury and a strong Moon further strengthen the journey window.

For travel muhurta, Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are always excluded as hard blockers, and Dur Muhurta and Varjyam are flagged as warnings. A key additional factor is Dik Shoola — the inauspicious direction of the day, which varies by weekday and should be avoided when starting a journey. Other blockers include Gandanta Moon, Kartari Yoga on Lagna, and an afflicted or debilitated Moon (the natural significator of movement and comfort). Rikta tithis are avoided; a waxing Moon and a strong lagna lord support a high-scoring departure window.
