Muhurta is the ancient Vedic art of selecting the most auspicious — or identifying the most inauspicious — moment for an action or event, by reading the energies of the sky at that exact instant.

Mundan (Chudakarana) is the Vedic first-haircut ceremony performed for young children, marking the child's entry into formal life. The muhurta evaluates tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna quality at the ceremony location. Auspicious nakshatras for Mundan include Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha and Shravana — nakshatras associated with health, vitality and new beginnings. The child's birth nakshatra is used to compute Tara Bala when provided, further refining the window selection.

For Mundan muhurta, Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are always hard-blocked. Dur Muhurta and Varjyam periods are flagged as warnings. Additional blockers include Gandanta (Moon at water-fire sign junction, considered especially sensitive for children's ceremonies), Kartari Yoga on Lagna, and a debilitated or combust Moon — since the Moon governs the child's emotional and physical vitality. Krishnapaksha (waning fortnight) tithis, particularly Ashtami, Navami and Chaturdashi, are generally avoided; Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon) tithis are strongly preferred.
