Muhurta is the ancient Vedic art of selecting the most auspicious — or identifying the most inauspicious — moment for an action or event, by reading the energies of the sky at that exact instant.

Education start muhurta (Vidyarambha Muhurta) identifies the most auspicious moment to begin school, a course, lessons or formal study. Classical Vedic texts associate learning with Mercury (intellect, speech and memory) and Jupiter (wisdom, guidance and higher knowledge). Wednesday (Mercury day) and Thursday (Jupiter day) carry strong vara scores; Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha and Revati are among the favored nakshatras for starting education. The scoring engine evaluates tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna strength, with additional weight on Mercury and Jupiter house positions.

For education start muhurta, Dur Muhurta and Varjyam are flagged as soft warnings. A debilitated or combust Mercury or Jupiter lowers the window score. Ashtama Lagna (8th house rising) and Moon in challenging houses (6th, 8th, 12th from Lagna) weaken mental focus. Tuesday and Saturday are generally considered less favorable varas for beginning study in classical muhurta texts; Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) are traditionally avoided for auspicious learning beginnings.
